Colleen Tauke

Colleen Tauke is a quilter, designer, and quilt educator with 40+ years of sewing experience, of those, the last 17 years have been centered around quilting.

Early in my quilting endeavors I was challenged to piece a quilt that seemed daunting – fussy cutting, y-seams, strip piecing, hourglass blocks, a pieced border, and appliqué – and that was all in ONE quilt – my first bed sized quilt, that would become a quilt shop sample and win a third place ribbon at the Iowa State Fair in the “my first quilt” division. I was hooked!

Kelly Ashton

As a self-described “pragmatic quilt-maker,” Kelly Ashton approaches quilt design and construction with a knowledge of and appreciation for the theoretical while searching for and developing skills and short-cuts that are practical. Kelly’s passion for patchwork covers a dichotomy between “microwave quilts” (quilts that are simple in design and quick to piece) to “crock-pot quilts” (quilts that are more intricate and complex in their construction), and she happily moves back and forth betwixt the two.....and everything in-between!

In addition to designing quilts, Kelly especially loves to teach and talk about quilts. Her motto is “Have quilts. Will travel.” Kelly and some of her classes can also be found on the new Craftsy website.

What to Expect

Exclusive Session with Kelly + Colleen

At the close of the Row-By-Row retreat, Kelly and Colleen are hosting a private special wrap-up session. In a more intimate Zoom setting (limited to just 50 guests) you will be able to directly ask them your questions about quilting, their experiences in the industry, and more. This exclusive opportunity is in addition to the Retreat package, and the cost for this private event is $5.

Each of the two quilts designed for this Retreat are different sizes: one a wall hanging/lap quilt and the other a large throw size.

With multiple block patterns and sizes within each quilt, you will learn how to make the quilts as they are or mix and match blocks to create your unique row quilts.  You will build blocks with the focus technique of partial seams and y-seams, with sashings and borders used to complete your row quilt creation. Choose the size you want and learn how to make it step-by-step!

ZJ HUMBACH

ZJ Humbach is a professional longarm quilter and pattern designer who owns and operates Dream Stitcher Quilt Studio in Nederland, Colorado. Her work appears in McCall’s Quilting, Quilters Newsletter, and Quiltmaker magazines. Now ZJ is a freelance writer for Quilters Newsletter and the Studio Arts Quilt Associates (SAQA) Journal. She also quilts regularly for Connecting Threads.

ZJ has enjoyed machine sewing since age 12. She has a strong educational background in clothing construction, tailoring, and interior design plus a Master of Arts Teaching degree with an emphasis on curriculum development and adult education.

TOBY LISCHKO

Toby comes from a long line of sewers. No one in her family had ever quilted, but her mother was a home economics teacher and seamstress, and her father was a tailor. In 1985 she thought it would be fun for her and her mom to do something together, so they signed up for their first quilting class. She was working full time as a Special Education teacher and this class was her summer activity.

In the six week class, she finished 5 or 6 quilt tops (some of which never got quilted). and was so proud of herself that she was able to put 3 colors together (light, medium, and dark)! That summer she got hooked on quilting, and in the 20+ years she has been quilting, she has never gotten bored with it.

HEATHER THOMAS

Heather is a mixed media fiber artist with a passion for color and a dedication to teaching. After a decade of making original yet traditional work, she began venturing out toward art quilting, embellishments, and mixed media work. With more than 12 years of studying and teaching color and design under her belt, she wrote her second book, A Fiber Artists’ Guide to Color & Design, which came on the heels of her very popular first book, Fabric Embellishing: The Basics & Beyond.

In 2011 Heather was a guest writer for Quilting Arts magazine with a multi-part feature on Free Style Machine Quilting. She also participates in group and individual instructional DVDs produced by the Creative Crafts Group.
