In December 2018, Phillip came home from school with a cough, fever, and runny nose. His parents were sure it was just a cold, but when his fever returned, Philip was admitted for further testing. It took 19 days to find out what type of cancer Phillip had. The mass in his chest took up 2/3 of his mediastinal area. He had 4 biopsies in total, 2 needle biopsies, one bone marrow biopsy and one open biopsy, which caused both of his lungs to collapse. On January 21st 2019, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma 2B. After several rounds of chemo and radiation, in August Phillip’s family got the best news. He was in remission. Phillip was incredibly brave throughout treatment, never complaining and taking everything he went through with such grace.

Peyton is big brother to Avery H. Straub, 9. She was born with a primary diagnosis of Prader-Willi syndrome, a rare and extremely complex genetic disorder, and has many secondary diagnoses that are equally complex when combined. She is loving and passionate about those things she cares about. She is resilient in her own right and she is an incredible fighter, taking on her illnesses head-on with a smile on her face. Avery loves her service dog, Kobe, school and therapies, coloring, and having something to do with her hands. She also loves music and spending time around her family.

Icing Smiles is a nonprofit organization that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child. We understand that the simple things, like a birthday cake, are luxuries to a family battling illness. Our goal is to create a custom cake for the ill child, or their sibling, that provides a temporary escape from worry and creates a positive memory during a difficult time.
Memories have magical powers. Long after the cake is gone, the memories linger – memories of the kindness of a stranger, of the art of the design, of the sweet smells of a special treat, of the smiles and laughs, of a normal childhood experience so often stolen from these children. These memories are why we say, “It is so much more than a cake.”
We are not a bakery, as a matter of fact, Icing Smiles doesn’t even have an oven! We rely on a generous team of volunteers spread throughout the U.S. to fulfill our mission. Will you join us in Baking a Difference?
